Lake Darners are among at least 13 different species of darners that can be found in Montana. If you look closely, you can notice the deeply notched thoracic (side) stripe on this female. This feature is similar to the thoracic stripe on the Canada Darner, with the exception that the Canada Darner (Aeshna canadensis) does not have black stripes across the face. Proper identification is often about the small details.
