Get curious and explore with your whole family!
The Missoula Butterfly House & Insectarium firmly believes that learning doesn’t end just because you don’t spend most of your day in a formal classroom anymore. Yes kids, the adults in your life love learning new things too! Towards that end MBHI will be hosting a series of family learning events where intergenerational groups can explore, play, and learn together.
Family Field Trips
Family Field trips are programs where families are able to complete an open-ended, bug-themed challenge or activity together. After a brief introduction family teams will be given the freedom to complete the programs’ challenge.
Check back soon for the next family field trip!
- Cost: $20 for members, $25 for non-members.
- Group Size: Family Field Trip groups are limited to 6 people per team. If your family has more than 6 members, please register for two groups.
- Pre-registration is required.
Does my family need to all live together or be related in order to sign up? Not at all. Families come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Sign up with whatever group makes sense for your family, related or chosen.
Is general admission to MBHI included with the cost of this program? No, admission is not included in this price. You’re more than welcome to visit our exhibits but you’ll need to do so before or after your program. We strongly recommend reserving your visit in advance.
Is there an age limit? This program is designed for groups with a wide range of ages. Any babies or young toddlers will need to be monitored by adults in your group as we won’t have supplemental childcare available during the program. Kids ages 3 and up will get the most out of these Family Field Trip programs.
How do I check in for the program? When you arrive, follow signs in the hallways for either our classroom or the Balsamroot room, both of which are down the long hall near our front desk.
Curious Creatures
Curious Creatures is a family learning experience specifically designed to foster curiosity about the world of arthropods. Families will work together in teams to complete a fun and creative challenge to explore the day’s theme. In addition to completing the activity challenge, families will be able to hold our Bug Ambassadors and ask plenty of questions. While similar to our Family Field Trips, Curious Creatures programs are longer and more structured with more station activities to choose from, a reflection activity to close out the experience, and post-program resources and interactions.
Available Fall 2024.
- Cost: $30 for members, $35 for non-members.
- Group Size: Curious Creatures groups are limited to 6 people per team. If your family has more than 6 members, please register for two groups.

What if my family is larger than the 6 person limit?
Not a problem! Just sign up twice and divide your family members between the two registrations.
