These small to medium sized butterflies range from central AK and the northern Yukon to southern CA, AZ and NM. To the east, they can be found all the way to the western edge of the Great Plains. Here in MT, they can be found on the wing from June into August. They are widespread in the western 2/3 of the state, being found in habitats that include prairie, forested foothills, and mountain meadows. Caterpillars feed on a variety of asters. Adults nectar from an even wider variety of flowers.
