Glenn offered his bug guiding services as an item for the Five Valleys Land Trusts’ annual auction. Accompanied by about 13 kids and six adults, they discovered plenty of bugs, including this larva found on a dead skunk—much to the kids’ delight! These beetles are mostly found on carrion, where the larvae feed on the carcass and adults feed both on the carcass and live insects, especially fly larvae. There are two generations per year and adults of the second generation overwinter. We’re guessing that this is the offspring of an overwintering adult. This species is widespread in the north and is also found in Eurasia. View a photo of an adult here.
