Insect Pinning Workshop: Gutting and Stuffing

June 4 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

$100

MBHI’s very own Museum Interpreter and Naturalist, Madeline Kleeman, will lead the third rendition of our insect pinning course, but this time switching gears from moths and butterflies to cockroaches and stick insects. This new course will include the task of carefully gutting the animal, cleaning its internal body cavity and stuffing it with an organic cotton. You will learn how to prepare these insects for pinning, pin 2-3 specimens from our collection, and leave with instructions on some of the ways to mount your specimens when they are dry. Each participant will leave with the specimens that they pinned, including at least one cockroach and one stick insect. All Skill levels are welcome.

Please note:  Pinning includes using sharp pins and working with delicate species, so attention to detail, manual dexterity, and patience are required. The gutting portion of this course is quick, but often has a new smell to it for folks so a mask is good to have, in case you find the smell unpleasant.
