A beautiful addition to the fall colors, the Band-winged Meadowhawk is the only meadowhawk with really defined and large, rusty patches on the wings next to the body. They are present late summer to early fall and prefer open, shallow ponds and marshes, as well as bogs and fens with some water flow. Band-wings, as well as other skimmers (family Libellulidae), sit on a perch and wait for insect prey to fly past. They frequently sally forth in pursuit, often returning to the same perch.
