Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus): This beautiful butterfly is the most widespread hairstreak in North America and can be found from southern Canada to Venezuela. Here in Montana, they appear to have 2 broods / flights a year (spring and late summer). They tend to be found in open, nonforested areas and nectar from a variety of flower species, including mint (which this one was found feeding from). The upper side of the gray hairstreak’s wings is blue-gray with large red spots near the tail. Photo by Glenn Marangelo on 8/19/17 near Wise River, MT.
