Thanks to Kristi for this stunning series. This common and abundant species is originally from Europe but is now widespread and synonymous with childhood. In the second photo you have the opportunity to count the number of legs, 14 total, and in the third photo you can see its signature defensive move. Pillbugs are nocturnal, terrestrial crustaceans (in the order Isopoda) and are closely related to animals like lobsters, crayfish, shrimps, and barnacles. Like their marine relatives, they use gill-like structures to exchange gases. They need moist environments to breathe but cannot survive being submerged in water.
