Edith’s Checkerspot (Euphydryas editha): The Edith’s Checkerspot tends to be found in mountain grasslands, typically near rocky outcrops. The males will perch or patrol all day to find females. There are several species of checkerspot butterflies in western Montana. Differences in the color of the antennal clubs and the patterns and coloration on both the top and underside of the wings are ways to tell the species apart. For example, the Edith’s has black on the lower half of the antennal club. Photo by Glenn Marangelo on 5/20/18 near Charlo, MT.
