Persius Duskywing (Erynnis persius) — These rather small butterflies have a wingspan of between 1 1/8 – 1 5/8 inches. In the west they can be found in the Rocky Mountain states to the Pacific Coast, north into Alaska. In the east, they are found from northern New England west to Wisconsin and south in the Appalachians to Virginia. Their caterpillars feed on leaves of a wide range of legumes and live in shelters of rolled or tied leaves. They are found in open areas including mountain grasslands, marshes, sand plains, seeps, and streamsides. Photo by Glenn Marangelo on 5/26/18 in Missoula, MT.
