These small butterflies can be found from late April into June and range from northern Alaska across North America to Nova Scotia, south in the Appalachians to Virginia, and south in the Rockies to New Mexico. They frequent open areas along conifer forest edges, bogs, and rocky ridges. The primary larval host plant is kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi).
