We believe this is a “teneral male,” meaning that it has recently emerged as an adult and the exoskeleton has not hardened and taken on its color. The yellow will actually turn red. James Needham (an early pioneer in the study of dragonflies) called this dragonfly a “singularly beautiful insect”. Adults emerge in June and fly throughout July and into mid August. An additional photo of a crimson-ringed whiteface was added to this submission for reference (right).
