Black Witch Moth (Ascalapha odorata) — This massive moth was initially thought to be a struggling bird at first glance. Black witch moths migrate from Mexico at the start of the rainy season (typically in June). They head northward, primarily through the western United States, and go as far as southern Canada. They can be regularly found throughout the year in S. Florida and S. Texas but are very rare in Montana. Photo by Dalit Guscio on 7/19/17 in Missoula, MT.
