Here’s another example of why it’s important to move slowly when out looking for insects. It would have been incredibly easy to miss these common barklice. These interesting insects are not lice at all, although they share the name of the parasites that affect humans and animals. This species is considered a beneficial insect because it consumes fungi, algae, and dead bark on tree limbs, cleaning the bark. The reason why this photo is a bit blurry, and what caught our attention, is because these little critters were on the move. If disturbed, barklice move in mass like a herd of cattle, giving the species the common names “bark cattle” and “tree cattle.”
