This dragonfly earned its name from a rusty patch at the base of its wings, which is a little difficult to see in this photo because of its position. The Band-winged Meadowhawk prefers open, shallow ponds and marshes, as well as bogs and fens with some water flow. They are one of our late summer / early fall species of dragonflies.
